ICP-MS Analysis: Heavy Metal Contaminant Controls in Botanical Supply Chains
Botanical crops absorb minerals and nutrients directly from the soil. Unfortunately, they can also accumulate toxic heavy metals present in the environment from industrial runoff, legacy pesticide usage, or naturally occurring geologic deposits. Consuming elevated levels of lead, cadmium, arsenic, or mercury poses severe health risks.
To protect consumer safety and maintain compliance with strict international regulations (including California Proposition 65 and USP standards), we analyze all bulk ingredients using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS).
The Science of ICP-MS
ICP-MS is the gold standard for elemental analysis. The process begins by dissolving the botanical sample in a high-purity acid mixture (nitric acid/hydrogen peroxide) under high temperature and pressure in a closed-vessel microwave digestion system.
The digested liquid is then nebulized into an aerosol and injected into an argon gas plasma torch operating at temperatures of 6,000K to 10,000K (as hot as the surface of the sun). This extreme heat breaks the chemical bonds, vaporizing and ionizing the individual atoms. The resulting positive ions are directed into a mass spectrometer quadrupole, which filters and counts the ions based on their specific mass-to-charge ($m/z$) ratios.
Industry Safety Limits and Compliance
ICP-MS is capable of detecting toxic elements at parts-per-billion (ppb) or even parts-per-trillion (ppt) levels, providing precision that traditional atomic absorption (AA) spectroscopy cannot match.
| Heavy Metal Element | USP <2232> Daily Limit | California Proposition 65 | Our Wholesale Intake Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lead (Pb) | 0.5 mcg / day | 0.5 mcg / day | < 0.2 ppm (parts-per-million) |
| Cadmium (Cd) | 4.1 mcg / day | 4.1 mcg / day | < 0.1 ppm |
| Arsenic (As) | 10.0 mcg / day | 10.0 mcg / day | < 0.2 ppm |
| Mercury (Hg) | 0.3 mcg / day | 0.3 mcg / day | < 0.05 ppm |
By maintaining limits well below the USP safety threshold, we guarantee that wholesale buyers can formulate finished dietary supplements that pass regulatory screening across all major markets.
