Companion Animal Adaptogens: Formulating Calm Solutions for Canine Anxiety

By Dr. Sarah Jenkins, DVM, Veterinary Consultant June 3, 2026

Just like humans, companion animals experience situational anxiety from triggers such as thunderstorms, fireworks, travel, or separation. While pharmaceutical options exist, many pet owners are seeking natural, botanical alternatives. Formulating these requires a strict focus on animal-safe dosages and non-toxic botanical ingredients.

Veterinary-Safe Botanicals for Calming

Canine physiology is highly sensitive to certain compounds. While adaptogens like Ashwagandha are excellent for dogs in low doses, other herbs commonly used by humans can be toxic.

Our canine-safe calming blend focuses on three core natural ingredients:

  • Organic Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla): Rich in apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to receptors in the brain to promote mild muscle relaxation and reduce situational anxiety.
  • Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis): Supports GABA levels in the brain, helping regulate nervous system activity and promote restful sleep.
  • Organic Hemp Seed Oil: Rich in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, which support cognitive health and reduce inflammatory markers, providing a nourishing liquid carrier.

Dosage and Safety Guidelines

Unlike humans, canine dosage must be strictly adjusted based on body weight.

Dog WeightRecommended Daily DosageActive Chamomile Target
Toy (< 10 lbs)0.25 mL (approx. 5 drops)5 mg
Small (10 - 25 lbs)0.50 mL (approx. 10 drops)10 mg
Medium (25 - 50 lbs)1.00 mL (approx. 20 drops)20 mg
Large (> 50 lbs)1.50 - 2.00 mL30 - 40 mg

Formulating Without Alcohol or Essential Oils

It is critical to note that liquid botanical extracts for pets must be formulated as alcohol-free glycerites or oil suspensions. Traditional alcohol-based tinctures can cause toxic reactions in dogs and cats, even in trace amounts. Furthermore, essential oils should never be added to ingestible pet formulations, as dogs lack specific liver enzymes required to metabolize them safely.
